Over the years we've made various minor alterations to Bluebird, most of which are shared here. We hope you find one or two good ideas you can use or adapt for your own boat.

Fridge Mate

Because we have an inboard petrol engine, the use of a gas powered refrigerator is too troublesome to comply with the BSS regulations and a condenser fridge unit too expensive for our uses. We like many other cruisers have a large 12V cool box which works well so long as you remember to turn it off when the engine isn’t running otherwise it kills the leisure batteries in no time. Something we’re not very good at.

We connected a Fridge Mate to the back of the 12v socket used by the fridge and now we no longer need to worry about it. We switch the fridge on when we arrive on the boat and leave it on until we unpack the fridge at the end of our cruising. The Fridge Mate monitors battery charging activity and automatically turns the power to the cool box ON and OFF as appropriate.
